An epic, heavy tune hits the AMS Radio airwaves today by VIAMAER, a Post-Black Metal project from Poland. “In Excitatione Terrae” is a guitar laden rock song packed with interesting dynamics. Truth be told, I was not familiar with “Post” Black Metal before listening to VIAMAER. Black Metal yes, I’ve written about a couple times on the blog, but only after listening to and reading into the work of Krystian Jurkiewicz (the multi-instrumentalist behind VIAMAER) did I catch on to concepts such as “Blackgaze,” a sub genre of Shoegaze, a key component to his Post-Black Metal sound.

And I’m here for it. “In Excitatione Terrae” is a captivating, mind wandering experience that builds up moment to moment into undeniable Black Metal arrangements, particularly in the vocals at the 2:10, 3:50, and 5:30 marks of the song. Those elements of the song make for some intense crescendos. Despite it carrying a dark, melancholy vibe it also feels cinematic and atmospheric. Very cool. What I like most about the track, as well as the album it’s on, “In Lumine Lunae,” is how it challenges what Black Metal is, what Shoegaze is, etc. It’s an amalgamation of sound not bound by genre. That’s what makes for good underground music.

One last interesting note about the album is that the lyrics are all in Polish, but the titles of the songs are Latin. Krystian Jurkiewicz talks about this in detail on the VIAMAER official website. “In Excitatione Terrae” translates to English as “In the Awakening of the World.”

“This track is about a moment of awakening and sudden change. Something that was dormant comes to the surface and takes control. Old structures collapse, and what emerges is stronger and more conscious. There is no nostalgia for what came before. This is the beginning of something new, even if it is born out of destruction.”
