Wow! Great stuff coming out of Dordrecht, Netherlands! When they submitted “What’s Come Over Me,” Secret Molecules described their track as a “nice 60s/90s vibe rock track,” which may be the understatement of the year. Granted, it’s only January, but “nice” barely scratches the surface. There’s a lot of classic power-pop energy to this track. I’m thinking Nick Lowe. I’m thinking Marshall Crenshaw. I’m thinking Paul Collins and the Beat, whom my buddy Jay Nachman just told me about a few days ago! I’m also hearing a more contemporary sympathetic vibration with my friends in Snap Infraction. Oddly, though the band mentions the 60s and 90s, the decade I’m hearing most prominently in this tune is the 70s. It’s like hopping in a ’75 Pacer, popping in an eight-track tape, and hitting the highway for a midsummer road trip — the perfect antidote, in fact, to the freezing temperatures we’ve been experiencing in my neck of the woods lately. Listen for the blazing guitar solo at 1:20!
