It happens from time to time. Well, a lot actually. Often times though I’m painfully distracted. In this case it’s the one of those less frequent “blissfully distracted” moments, where I feel compelled to write about something. Like, right now. Indeed here I am, veering away from my normal weekend workflow and preparation to write about something that caught my attention via email. Grymm Neve, AKA Grymm Within, dropped a cover tune of Nirvana’s “Breed” yesterday. If you know me well enough, you know that already had me going, “mmkay … tell me more….”

Outside of me already just being a huge fan of Nirvana and Independent music, a lot of “boxes” were checked along the way leading up to my interest in writing this post. As an artist, I’ve been tracking and covering a few Nirvana tunes in coordination with an ongoing project in the Onlythehost community on Discord. Furthermore, I was featured on a collaboration track from the latest Brian Lambert album of this very song! What is cool about Lambert’s version is that it took a song I already loved and put a signature flavor and spin on it. Grymm Within, a U.K. based artist signed to One Eyed Toad Records, does so as well, performing it in Drop E. That low-drop tuning incorporates his stylistic flavor of Death / Extreme Metal. Neve, most notably known for his work in the Death Metal band Vesicarum, features his bandmate from that project Jack Buckley on the track. Buckley contributes eight-string guitar work.

Lastly, but most importantly, the tune was distributed for a cause. All proceeds of this song are going to the Sophie Lancaster Foundation. The tragic story of Sophie Lancaster is sadly at the core of the foundation’s mission: to educate, stimulate, and celebrate the importance of tolerance and inclusivity. You can support and buy the song on Bandcamp:

For giggles, here’s some side by side comparisons for any dorks like me that now feel compelled to celebrate, re-live, and take in variations of a song I love:
