How to get my attention: Tell me your new song is about your dog.

How to keep my attention: Make it a good song.

Charlie Angel checks both boxes with his new tune, “Nico My Friend,” and earns bonus points for the fact that he named his dog after the singer who graced the first Velvet Underground album with her unique but contentious vocal presence. There’s a strong rockabilly feel on this track, and the vocal sounds to me a like a ghostly, etherial Buddy Holly. Lyrically, it’s about the kind of nonjudgmental joy only the company of a dog can bring. It’s the kind of track — and this is highest praise coming from me — I can imagine on the soundtrack of a David Lynch movie. Look for it on Charlie Angel’s forthcoming album, Quiet as a Bang.

  1. PS: If I didn’t know better, I’d think Charlie was trying to curry additional favor with me by subtly placing a cobra on his album cover!
