Chicago’s Das Sporten is a new arrival to the station with a new song called “Just a Dog.” The song is upbeat, and has a bright natural sound to it, reminiscent of some of my favorite late 80s/ early 90s music such as The Pixies. Lyrically, the song is contemplative, an internal dialogue going back and forth with oneself, trying to rationalize. In a nutshell, it’s about conflicting emotions that come with considering taking your dog in, but you don’t want the dog to die. Certainly, a possible outcome to making that decision. “Don’t do it! I love dogs and they are worth it! Even though they can be a lot of work sometimes ….” I shout at the song as I tap my foot. You ever seen a grown man crying while doing the twist? That’s what’s going on here with this new arrival. Ahh the complexities of pet ownership. I know the struggle well, especially after so many years as a renter.

Musically, the band described the recording process as minimalistic, mic’ing everything with not many effects. And I think that approach set the stage well for the distorted guitar solo that happens around the 2 minute mark to stand out. The band mentioned that their influence is just “The 90s” in general when describing their sound. As I listen to some of their other music, I’d say that is a pretty accurate consistency across the body of work. I would also say that if you like music like The Violent Femmes and the aforementioned Pixies, Das Sporten is a good recommendation for you.
