I logged into AMS Radio to look for a different song, but there was “Crowns” by Hello London acting all innocent and nondescript with its emo leanings and a reference to Jimmy Eat World in the description. Truth be told, I initially thought the description said Jaimee Eat World, which would have been something since that’s my favorite Jimmy Eat World cover project. Imagine someone citing a tribute act as a touchstone. It would completely upend the natural order of things, and what could be more punk than that? But enough about me and my dyslexia. Let’s focus on the music: “Crowns” is a rockin’ tune. A loud lo-fi acoustic guitar gives way to loud lo-fi electric guitars, and then it’s off to the races with a soaring vocal singing about broken dreams and the worst parts of life. So, yeah, standard emo fare–but then the song takes a cool psychedelic turn as it approaches the three-minute mark before returning to the “dream is over” theme. Which is really smart because look, here’s the song, and then look, here’s the dream, and then before you can even get into it, damn, the dream is over and we’re back into the song. Which isn’t a bad thing. It’s just that it’s always hard to wake up from dreams.
