Ahhhh, the internet. An abode of mighty keyboard warriors and know it all’s. A tool for information and research. A means of communication and connectivity worldwide. A..repurposing the words of Obi Wan … “wretched hive of scum and villainy.” Yet, in these modern times, it is almost unfathomable to live without it.
A submission to the radio station caught my attention today by an artist named Lina Cooper. Her song titled, “Some Random Girl (That Never Made it on the Internet)” is a snarky, pop punk social critique about the idea of internet clout. As independent artists find themselves buried within bought and sold algorithms, and with generative AI saturating an already crowded market at an exponential rate, we find ourselves in an oddly familiar space, similar to before the internet. Staleness. Lack of originality. “Pre-internet,” you’d get burnt out on hearing the same popular song playing on 3 different stations, at the same time, for hundredth time in a day. Now, it’s the same phenomenon, that same feeling. However, it’s not technically the same song, but in a sense it is somehow. It’s technically not the same “artist,” yet … it is, given that half the time it’s not even a real artist at all. That kind of listener fatigue, as I would call it, is what Lina Cooper’s song is speaking to. At least, that’s how I interpret what I’m listening to. It’s an interesting, catchy song. Check it out.

“This is the final single off of my EP with the same name. Honestly this track’s pretty self-explanatory. I hate what the Internet did to art & music. We are now slaves to the algorithm and I did not sign up for this. With that said, I’d much rather be “some random girl that never made it on the Internet” than a sell out.”
